Filed under » Drums, Percussion, Rhythm, Aesthetics, Master Drummers, Drumsticks, Trueline Drumsticks, Drum Lessons, Rudiment Ideas, Techniques — DF @ 11:50 am So, Hi AgaiN DruMMers Paradise Folks! >>>
Here is Another GREAT Rudiment ExCercise for Y’All to get Your Hands (or Feet!) Around!!! >>>
On June 1st I Wrote a VeRy Popular Blog oN My VersioN of a SimoN Phillips Rudiment Idea whiCh I caMe acrosS oN a Video Cassette “Zildjian Day in LONDON” >>> On this Tape Mr.Phillips demonstrates (at Absurdly FAST Speeds!) soMe Really GoOd Rudiment Ideas oN a Snare Drum infront of a Large Audience of KEEN DruMMers >>>
One of MY FAVOURITE RUDIMENT EXCERCISES OF ALL TIME (!) was Shown oN this PerformaNce.
It is such a Simple Yet effective Idea & as ALL My MaNy Students oVer the Years will contest, iS oNe that I TeaCh, Practice & LOVE!!!!!>>>
“The 9/8 Paradiddle Excercise”
This Brilliant Idea Consists of 1 Pair of Each Type of Paradiddle >>>
2 Single Paradiddles/2 Double Paradiddles/2 Triple Paradiddles, Played TOGETHER as ONE FLOWING Piece, Like this………
RLRR LRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL >>>Repeating as a Continuous Loop
To make this Smooth & Effective Play it IN TIME with a Strong Accent (Louder Note) on the Leading Hand of EVERY Paradiddle
>>> Something like this :
(R)LRR (L)RLL (R)LRLRR (L)RLRLL (R)LRLRLRR (L)RLRLRLL etc.
(I WISH there was a NiCer LoOKing way of Showing You that oN My Mac!!! SeXy as this Computer IS, It’s difficult to show Accents NICELY!…..Ah Well !!!)
If You are Left Handed, Start the Sequence from the Left Hand. >>>
This Rudiment is iN the Time Signature of 9/8 >>>
This is BeCause the Single & Triple Paradiddles are iN 4/4 while the Double Paradiddle is iN the 6/8 Signature, Therefore the Whole ExCercise wheN Played as oNe becomes 9/8 (as if by MAGIC!!!)
So Go for it Folks!! >>> Get Your FaVourite Practice Pad (& if You Don’t HaVe a DeCent Pad…..Get One!) Grab Your Best StiCks (Trueline make soMe Very NiCe oNes!!!) >>> & GET PRACTICING!!!!!
I GUARANTEE You WILL LOVE this ExCercise as MuCh as I DO!!!
For all You Double Pedal Boys & Girls, How about trying this WITH Your FEET!!!>>>

great excercise, practice it regularly although i have to make do playing on my snare as i dont have a nice pad >> looking into getting one at the mo.
also try with a samba bass, this runs as if you were when playing paradiddles normally with a samba bass. you should always end up playing the second (stronger) bass of a samba pair with the first (accented) note of the single paradiddles. (hope that makes sense!! cant figure out how to right that as a sequence)
have a go >> i think it works on relating feet with hands and in my opinion FEELS, and SOUNDS nicer than without the samba bass.

if you can do it, there’s 2 ways to show the accent using HTML. (and let’s ee if comments allow HTML)
method 1:
the <pre> method…
space it all out correctly in your text editor, then put <pre> at the start, and </pre> at the end:
RLRR LRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL
> > > > > >
method 2:
Use <b></b> to bold round the accented note:
RLRR LRLL RLRLRR LRLRLL RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL
Of course, if this looks a mess because HTML doesn’t work - I’ll explain at my next lesson
